Shorter days bring longer nights — and for some, seasonal mood changes. If you find yourself feeling a bit sluggish or down as the sun sets earlier, you’re not alone. Read on for tips to keep your own light burning bright, no matter what the sun is doing.

Tips to Navigate Your Seasonal Mood Changes

We’ll start with the obvious. A magic pair that’s recommended for a whole host of physical issues: exercise and sunlight.  Exercise releases endorphins that boost and regulate your mood.  Exposure to natural sunlight helps to stabilize your circadian rhythm, keeping your mood on track. If natural sunlight is a challenge to get because of your location or schedule, consider investing in a therapy lamp that mimics daylight.

Next, stay on top of your nutrition. If you’re feeling down or exhausted, you’re more likely to experience carbohydrate or sugar cravings. This is your body’s way of accessing quick energy. However, eating lots of carbs and sugar can make you crash harder later. Try keeping nutrient-rich, whole foods on hand to support your body in feeling its best with a steady supply of nutrients and vitamins.

Try bringing some nature into your indoor space. Houseplants are known to purify the air in your home, which can positively influence your mood.  If you’re afraid you’re lacking the green thumb gene, give air plants oder succulents a try first. They like to be left alone!

Finally, focus on staying hydrated. Being adequately hydrated helps all your organs to do their best work. Seasonal mood changes can feel even worse on a body that’s not operating at full capacity. Staying hydrated can help take the edge off your mood changes while helping your brain function the best that it can.

Experiencing seasonal mood changes is nothing out of the ordinary – but it doesn’t mean you have to suffer. If you feel that you can’t handle the changes that come with shorter days, please reach out to your healthcare professional. No one should feel like they are alone in their suffering.
