A ‘Beary’ Special Evening Helping Children Feel Comfortable at the Doctor

6月 23, 2026
Teddy Bear Clinic | Gateway Hancock Health

Families filled Gateway Hancock Health on June 18 for the Beary Special Teddy Bear Clinic, a free community event designed to help children feel more comfortable with healthcare through hands-on play and imagination.

Children were invited to bring their favorite teddy bears, stuffed animals and dolls for a special “checkup” at the clinic. Upon arrival, each furry friend was checked in and received a patient chart documenting the reason for their visit. While waiting for their appointments, families enjoyed snacks provided by Leo’s Market and Eatery and participated in a variety of fun activities.

Once called back, children helped clinic staff take their stuffed companions’ height, weight and temperature before nurses conducted examinations and provided care. From X-rays and vaccinations to casts, bandages and lab work, each stuffed patient received personalized attention based on its unique needs.

The event created a welcoming, low-pressure environment where children could explore medical procedures through play, helping ease fears and build familiarity with healthcare settings. By caring for their beloved stuffed animals, children gained confidence while learning about the role of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The Beary Special Teddy Bear Clinic was offered free of charge in an open-house format and welcomed families from across the community. Gateway extends its gratitude to event partner Leo’s Market and Eatery for helping make the evening a success alongside our amazing group of volunteers. As well as Pizza Twist for providing our volunteers with dinner.

The clinic was not only a fun experience for children and families but also a meaningful opportunity to introduce healthcare concepts in a gentle, engaging way—one ‘stuffie’ at a time.
